Hi Chere,
If you were there in 95 then we may have crossed paths. I looked it up in Claudia's log:
Wednesday August 16, 1995
Weighed anchor at 07:30 for a relatively calm run up Fitzhugh Sound to Namu which the tourist guide book glibly explains has amenities. Not exactly so! There is a café that opens sporadically at the whim of the proprietor and serves only coffee. There is a store with equally dicey hours of business, opening and closing at odd times through out the day. It has an enormous but depleted inventory ranging from gardening tools to fishing gear, alcohol and non-perishable foodstuffs and spare parts for an incredible variety of machinery…. a general store in the grand old fashioned sense! The fish packing plant is mostly dismantled and/or in ruins. The 40 some odd houses scattered in groups around the cannery are in various stages of repair/disrepair. The gymnasium is in reasonably good repair and is a marvel with its sprung floor. The bunkhouse/hotels named respectively the Edgewater Inn and the Namu Hilton are falling into the sea, as are the boat ways. The buildings are interconnected by a series of boardwalks also in varying degrees of dilapidation. One such boardwalk traverses the forest between Namu Harbour and the lake ¾ of a mile away from which the water supply is obtained by pumping it from the lake to an enormous cistern then down to Namu. One of the concrete block buildings houses six virtually new generators only one of which is in use at this time. Gossip has it that when B.C. Packers pulled out the intermediate owners went into receivership and that the most recent owner’s are arriving soon to, in the opinion of one of the resident caretakers, “log the area rather than try to restore it”. We walked and snooped for most of the day. I purchased a small oak dresser found languishing and covered with layers of dirt and peeling varnish in one of the ramshackle cabins. Also acquired a couple of green light shades covered with years of baked on fish oil and smelling like it too!
Thursday August 17, 1995 Went up to the cabin and got the dresser and as requested discretely loaded them from the float in front of the Namu Hilton. Pooped the dog and cast off at 11:00 making way up Fisher Channel for Ocean Falls.

Most of the Calvert Island photos are on the beach on the Northwest coast. (Walk through past the lodge in Pruth Bay at the west end of Kwakshua Channel) and in Choked Passage, a little further North.
When I was last there in 2006 there was a nice older gentleman watching the place. I suspect he may still be there. He would likely be getting his supplies from Kitimat so a call to the marina offices there might get a message to him.
You will likely be dismayed at how the place has deteriorated since you where there last.
Nice romantic story. Best of luck in your pursuits.

This is Linda again, the 1980 caretaker. Please email me if you know how to contact the current caretaker on Butedale. It would be so great if we could fill in for him for awhile! Thanks, llambdin@santacruz.k12.ca.us Linda

I was the caretaker for Butedale during the winter of 1980 and 1981. (I was 26 years old.) My traveling companion at the time was supposed to care take with me but he had to go home to Minnesota because his dad was sick. I lived there alone for 4 months and loved it. It's now 30 years later and the guy I was supposed to care take with and I are back together and getting married. I'd like to honey moon there. Does anyone know how to contact the current caretaker? Linda
