Butedale is pretty much abandoned and falling down. There is a fellow living there (2005) who has fixed up a float and provides moorage to passing boats. I don't know what the status of the property is. The Butedale Founders group from Oregon who were there around 2000 with plans to 'fix the place up' seem to have moved on.

Oddly enough, about the only thing for sale in Butedale in 2005 was Ice Cream......

I first visited Butedale in 1983. It had been shutdown and was being attended by a caretaker. The docks were in reasonable shape, the buildings all mostly in good shape and the lights all burning (to keep a load on the generator). There were plans to turn it into a resort... Over the years I visited or flew over the site numerous times (I was posted in Pr Rupert with the Coast Guard) as the buildings began to deteriorate and other similar coastal communities (Namu, etc) began to meet a similar fate. A number of investors with dreams of reviving these spots have come and gone; but the wharves, buildings and history slowly crumble into the sea or are overtaken by the forests. ???

I'm very surprised that noone ever turned Butedale into a water bottling factory. they had the wharehouse, housing, power, and the water. Its been known by many fishermen that butedale had the best water. and cleanest ice on the BC coast.
I first visited butedale in 1968, my father delivered fish there in the 40's.

I usually go ashore in the dink and put the creek water into 4 liter jugs (and have avioided Beaver Fever ... so far) and filter in the cockpit before dumping into the tanks. Is there a better way?

A long piece of inch and quarter PVC pipe with a garden hose fitting on the bottom end. It weighs little and stows lashed to the upper deck railings. Leaning it up into the flow provides the head to fill the tanks. We have backed in, anchored and stern tied adjacent to a falls using our 100 foot hose or in some places one can simply drive up to the base of a small falls and lean the pipe up into it. Large falls generally have too much current and turbulence to maintain close station keeping. Whatever you do don't get any part of the boat under a large falls.

Butedale used to have a hose coming off the starboard side of the main dock. where the old store was situated. i wouldnt be surprised if there are still fittings and lines that you could connect to.

I was the caretaker for Butedale during the winter of 1980 and 1981. (I was 26 years old.) My traveling companion at the time was supposed to care take with me but he had to go home to Minnesota because his dad was sick. I lived there alone for 4 months and loved it. It's now 30 years later and the guy I was supposed to care take with and I are back together and getting married. I'd like to honey moon there. Does anyone know how to contact the current caretaker?

You may be able to find out who the owner is and what is going on at Butedale by contacting the listing agent.

Alternatively you can find out who holds the title from the BC Land titles office:

When I was last there in 2006 there was a nice older gentleman watching the place. I suspect he may still be there.
He would likely be getting his supplies from Kitimat so a call to the marina offices there might get a message to him.

You will likely be dismayed at how the place has deteriorated since you where there last.
